Individual preference in wine, varies a great deal. There are a vast range of different kinds available, from Rioja to Riesling, along with numerous others from all over the world, making it difficult to pick if you are not sure what you are looking for.
Make sure you know what type of wine a person prefers when purchasing it as a gift. An award winning Rioja is not going to score any points with someone who adores drinking Shiraz.
If your task is to select a bottle for yourself, you will only need to concern yourself with your own preference. Whether it has won awards or has been well recommended means nothing at all unless you actually love it.
When a person identifies their favourite wine they know it is the one instantly. During the period of experimentation when trying lots of different bottles to establish what you like the most, it is not necessary to splash out too much on individual bottle of wine. If a particular wine is not your ‘type’, you are unlikely to really enjoy it no matter how expensive it is. The moment you taste the ideal wine for your palate you will know immediately. The moment you have found it you will realise what all the fuss is about!
There are extremely divided opinions over which wines can or should, be described as a fine wine. For a number of people, anything costing over 10, it is a fine bottle of wine. To someone else, it is not a fine wine unless it costs more than 30.
Anything described as ‘fine’ gives an impression of great quality, but people have very different perceptions about quality too. Many producers manage to market their wines as fine because of their past excellenceand not the individual quality of the wine produced each year.
A good track record often has some merit, but it is important to remember that price and brand name are not always a guaranteed indicator of fine wine. Personal taste is what really counts. If a wine tastes incredible to you, you will probably describe it as ‘fine’. You will identify the wine you like best through experience.
A great way to experience different wines is to sign up to one of the reputable wine clubs to have selected bottles delivered to your home every month, or simply pop in to your local wine specialist and take advantage of their knowledge and advice.
